Ms. Lee : Creative Thinking/Mixed Media Specialist

I started teaching Craft, Design and Technology in 1986 in London and did so for three years.  I thoroughly enjoyed this subject area as it involved the creative process and working with a variety of materials. However, I moved into the Art field when I moved abroad to teach and have since been the Head of Art in two International Schools in the Philippines ;one for 14 years where I was the Head of Art and Creative Arts Centre coordinator (achieving international exam results above the world average for 14 years in a row) and the latter for 5 years where I was the Head of Elementary Fine and Performing Arts. I sincerely believe in the importance of Art and, far more importantly, Creative Thinking, not only as a complement to other studies but as the basic structure that all learning should be hung on. Creative thinking is a force in life that is necessary to address in ALL students. I see myself as a facilitator more than a teacher, encouraging students to develop their own ideas and concepts; giving voice to a persons innate creativity as I like to put it.  I feel it is important to guide rather than dictate. I encourage students to think about what makes them tick and to work through their conflicts and aspirations by researching, problem solving and creating artworks that deal with issues real to them.  It is also important for me to be a functioning artist; It is essential for my own fulfilment and to be an inspirational role model for students. Since moving to Malta I have found myself regularly inspired to either paint or write (depending on what materials are to hand at the time!). All of my works are deeply personal and expressive pieces directly related to current experience. In fact, I don’t always choose to paint, I have to and the ideas just unfold as I start work. Sometimes I paint in class, either on a piece I may be working on or a backdrop for school and the students are absolutely fascinated by seeing the work develop.  I have recently developed my Animal portraiture and my work can be seen on the following facebook link:

My experience of living abroad started as a child and most of my working life has been spent overseas. I love to immerse myself in a variety of cultures and have now finally folded my wings here in Malta. I dont expect to be moving on as I have always wanted to return since living here in the 70’s. (If there was anywhere in the world to enjoy the 70’s as a teenager, it was here!) I have come to realise over the years that I passionately teach Creative Thinking through the medium of Art. The core set of values that guide my classes include valuing original ideas, demonstrating enterprise and innovation, and engaging with and responding to the aesthetic qualities of the natural and constructed world. The creative process of: Researching, Analysing, developing Initial Ideas, choosing a Final idea, Making, Evaluating/Reflecting and finally making an Action Plan for further developments underpins my classes, private or otherwise: With a sound understanding of the Creative process students will  eventually develop the self belief and confidence to create not only substantive works of art but to function creatively in any life situation.  The elements of Line, Shape, Form, Color, Value, Pattern and Texture are the basic concepts that are developed through carefully thought out projects with younger children. Essential skills are taught, continuously reinforced and enhanced at different levels according to the child’s ability. Most importantly, all of this has to make sense in todays world and I ensure my students fully understand that creative thinking is not just an Art skill but a prerequisite for success in any context.
